Aerial drone film production company Light Colour Sound recently partnered with surf forecasting Magicseaweed.com website to create a video of a big wave surf competition at Nazare in Portugal, as part of a special online magazine feature.

A video featuring aerial footage of surfers riding massive waves at a notorious big wave spot in Portugal was recently selected for publication by prominent international surf website Magicseaweed.com.

The video by UK drone aerial filming specialists Light Colour Sound illuminates the power and beauty of waves and the fortunes of the big wave surfers during a massive winter swell at Nazare in Portugal.

The film, which captures the energy and excitement of the scene, was published as part of a special magazine feature on magicseaweed.com, which is a source of information and inspiration for surfers worldwide.

The Nazare drone video can be viewed on Magicseaweed.com and also on YouTube.

During the event, the company also secured a world first for big wave surfing by delivering a live drone feed to Facebook, which resulted in thousands of views to Magic Seaweed’s social media page.

Light Colour Sound was invited to document the big wave event as part of the Magic Numbers series of surf contests, which only happen once a year or two around the world when the swell size and frequency reaches or exceeds a certain number.

The event, supported by Monster and Swell, attracted some of the world’s best big wave surfers including Lucas Chumbo, Jamie Mitchell, Francisco Porcella, Nic von Rupp, Pedro Scooby, Nic Lamb, Rodrigo Koxa, Sebastian Steudtner and Everaldo Pato.

James Keith from Light Colour Sound commented: “The event at Nazare was an incredible spectacle. Standing on the headland and witnessing the sheer power of these waves was breathtaking. But seeing these tiny surfers riding down the face of these moving giants was nothing short of was awe-inspiring.

“The strong wind and buzz of activity at the event made flying a drone particularly difficult. We had to work our magic to get the drone into a position to get the best possible footage of the surfing action.”

Light Colour Sound is a Cornwall based film production company and drone aerial filming specialist. The team of camera and drone equipment operators create promotional videos and documentaries for clients all over the world, as well as collaborating with organisations such as the BBC and National Trust on TV dramas and films.

The company was selected as the filming partner for the event because it has a long history of shooting surf footage in the UK and many locations around the world.

James Keith added: “It was an honour to be asked to work with some of the planet’s top surfers and surf event organisers, at a big wave location which is renowned as one of the best in the world. During those few days of intense action, we documented an extreme ocean event which may take some years to surpass.”
