Dr. Tavakoli Discusses Abdominoplasty for Women Following Childbirth

According to Dr. Tavakoli, one of the most common reasons why women seek consultation with plastic surgeons is to regain their pre-pregnancy figure.

The abdomen is probably the one area of a woman’s body that is most affected by pregnancy. Following childbirth and especially after multiple pregnancies, a lot of women have to deal with loose skin, stretch marks, muscle laxity, excess fat and stretch marks.

Surgery to improve the appearance of the abdomen (abdominoplasty) is generally recommended for patients who are near their ideal body weight, with proper diet and regular exercise routines. The surgery, commonly referred to as a tummy tuck, restores a woman’s tummy to its original position and shape.

Abdominoplasty is always performed under general anesthesia, with one incision being made across the lower abdomen, and another around the navel. The skin is separated from the muscle and up toward the ribs. The skin is then pulled down and the muscles stitched together to tighten the tummy.

In the past, tummy tucks often left women with a flat stomach, but the hips and back looked bigger as a result. Today, the procedure extends to the hips and back if needed, giving the benefit of extra contouring and a much thinner hip line into the back.

As a result, tummy tucks are sometimes combined with liposculpture for a better result. This is usually the case when a patient is also dealing with love handles and requires the upper thighs to be resculpted. Even with exercise and dieting, these are two areas that do not change, making surgery desirable.

Liposuction is performed on the outer fat to contour the new shape. When performing tummy tucks and liposuction, Dr. Tavakoli attempts to remove more than half of the stretch marks during the operation. In addition, he uses the latest Barbed Suture technology, which achieves minimal length and scarring. The latest Fraxel laser technology is also used to deal with the scars, which usually fade over 2 years.

Generally a tummy tuck can cost anywhere between $10,000 and $16,000 dollars depending on the detail of surgery needed. Although tummy tucks are considered cosmetic surgery, some conditions, including hernias, diastasis or trauma resulting in muscle loss or painful scar contracture, can be covered by insurance.

One of Dr. Tavakoli’s patients, a 29-year-old mother of five, has this to say about her experience when getting a tummy tuck: “I tried to keep my expectations reasonable. However, the results were beyond my expectations. My flat, tight stomach and new belly button are amazing! The recovery was quick and the scarring very tidy and easily hidden.”
