In response to an article on India.com, Dr. Gabriel offers advice on what to do when you think your child may have developed the chicken pox

BROOKLYN, NY / .myprgenie.com / April 29, 2014 / Dr. Michael Gabriel of GPM Pediatrics comments on an article published byIndia.com that offers several tips on how to identify the chicken pox. Even with the obvious red spots it can sometimes be difficult to identify certain symptoms as they can be confused with other illnesses.

According to the article, there are several symptoms that are developed after coming into contact with someone who had chicken pox, usually 15-16 days after initial contact. Many times the initial symptoms may be confused with the common cold or even flu-like symptoms, which can lead to a misdiagnosis by doctors. Chicken pox is part of the varicella zoster virus which can lead to shingles later in life. It is contracted by direct contact with an infected person.

The first symptom that usually arises, according to the article, is a high fever. This is how it is commonly misdiagnosed by the flu as a headache usually follows. Itchy red spots are usually the most common symptom along with chicken pox spots which normally develop blisters. Loss of appetite and overall fatigue are also commonly associated with the chicken pox.

Dr. Michael Gabriel says, "Chicken pox can sometimes be hard to identify. This is why it is important to have your pediatrician do a solid checkup so it is not misdiagnosed. These symptoms are great indicators as to whether your child is developing chicken pox. As many people know, chicken pox can lead to shingles later in life. This is part of the same virus, but it can be a very uncomfortable and painful experience so you want to be sure children avoid contracting chicken pox."

Dr. Gabriel advises parents to keep their children home if they do contract chicken pox so as to not put any other kids in danger. He also urges parents to make sure they are keeping their kids away from germs and washing their hands frequently. He says, "If any of these symptoms arise be sure to contact your physician immediately."
