More and more men have made the switch to front pocket wallets as styles have become more streamlined and fitted. After all, a bulky wallet stuffed into the back pocket of skinny jeans or fitted dress pants doesn’t make a good look. But in addition to using the new style wallets for fashion purposes, many doctors are sounding the alarm about potential health issues that stem from using back pocket wallets.
“Sitting on your wallet is as much a health concern as walking around with one shoe on and one shoe off,” says Dr. Frank J. Martusciello.
Doctors say that when a man sits on a walled that’s stuffed in his back pocket, it causes the spine to tilt. And that tilting put stress on your lower back and hip joint, which can lead to pain. The pain comes from the sciatic nerve, which gets pinched between the hip and the wallet, and although that pain originates in the butt cheek, it can travel all the way down the leg.
“We’ve seen a significant increase in men who are tired of carrying around a wallet in their back pocket,” says a spokesman from MJH Innovations, an online seller that offers many of its products through Amazon Prime. “Those men are realizing that they don’t have to carry everything they own in their wallet. Instead, they’re going for a more streamlined look and reducing the amount of stuff they carry—and then putting it all in a front pocket wallet.”
He’s right. There is a movement across the world of men who have realized their back pain comes from sitting on a wallet all day. Many of these men have begun carrying front pocket wallets, and the trend is only increasing.
“When you look for a front pocket wallet,” says the spokesman, “be sure to look for one that doesn’t hold too much. Otherwise you’ll only put yourself at more risk for pain. Most doctors are recommending minimalist front pocket wallets.
