‘Back Stabber’, the new Series On Amazon, has gained major popularity with its messages of acceptance, anti-bullying, drug abuse and life in recovery. Now Ryan Zamo, the 27-year-old creator, opens up about his real life events that inspired the ‘Back Stabber’ storyline.

Drug abuse within the teenage demographic was once on a steady decline for almost a decade, but now according to DrugFree.org, the number of teenagers addicted to some sort of illegal substance is spiking at an all-time high.

Furthermore, one in four teenagers have reported dabbling in binge drinking since age 14, and almost 45% of teens say drinking heavily everyday is not something they considered risky behavior. According to the studies performed by DrugFree.Org, teen addiction and binge drinking is due to a lower security measure by doctors with prescription pills, which is aiding in the spike of teenage addicts.

‘Back Stabber’, the new series on Amazon, focuses on acceptance, anti-bullying and the rise in teenage addiction. 27-year-old Ryan Zamo, the creator and writer of the new break out TV series, has opened up about his experiences that inspired the plot of the new show.

With the first interview published this week, Zamo talks about his drinking problems since being a teen, and eventual addiction to cocaine and methamphetamine, he said, “Addiction runs in my family, and it has ruined us in the past, and still continues to run ramped through my relatives.” The 27-year-old opened up about his mother, who passed away in 2015, and her struggles with alcoholism her whole life, saying, “I swore I would never be like her. But don’t we all say we won’t be like our parents? Sadly, it ruined my childhood and played a major role with my own addiction.”

With ‘Back Stabber’ revolving around its main messages of acceptance and anti-bullying, the young writer said the plot was inspired by his teenage years, Zamo mentioned, “I struggled a long time trying to find who I was. In high school, I lived in the shadows of my older brothers who were star athletes, and as hard as I tried I just wasn’t like them. I came out at 16, and being one of two openly gay kids in my town, I was harassed and bullied all the time. When I finally went away to college, I was able to really discover who I was and be comfortable with myself, but that just made the internal turmoil even worse.” Trying to escape his inner pain, Zamo began drinking to ‘black out’ daily, and soon found himself unable to function without alcohol.

Now almost 3 years clean and sober, the 27-year-old said it was years after his daily drinking started, that he became heavily addicted to drugs, saying, “I always swore I would never do drugs. That went out the window really quick though, I realized that doing cocaine and smoking meth helped me drink more, and I could stay up for days doing it. Most people using amphetamines don’t like to drink while on it, not me, I purposely made myself a drug addict so I could continue to drink more.”

Now living a new life, Ryan says he embraces his past, mentioning it has helped shape who he is today, adding, “Every day I wake up alive clean and sober is a gift to me. And no matter how terrible my day is, if someone asks how I’m doing, I always say ‘Fantastic’. Because any day alive, is truly a fantastic day to me, I am so blessed to have made it out of my attempted suicides and over-doses. That’s why I knew I had to open up the world to ‘Back Stabber’, to see what’s it like to be an addict, and how easy it is to become one.”

The new series ‘Back Stabber’ and its messages, have become a hit among viewers around the world. Many viewers say that the story truly resonates with them because it is based on real life events, hitting home knowing the struggles addicts go through, making the characters more than just characters in a show.
