For patients who are going through their battle with cancer they can lessen the blow of the physical changes the treatment brings through this revolutionary ‘cooling cap’. It battles the common signs of chemotherapy treatment which is hair loss.This new hair loss treatment is referred to as DigniCap, and it looks similar to a helmet which is clinically proven to prevent hair loss caused by chemotherapy. The trials were done in Asia and Europe on individuals of diverse ethnicities. Results showed that those who were using the cap during chemotherapy were able to retain their hair.
Additional trials done in leading medical centers around the world also proved that the Dignicap can be considered a viable alternative for men and women.
The principle behind this cooling unit works in the same way as a refrigerator. When applied, the cap is cooled to the right temperature with the help of a compressor. The circulation to the head is controlled by the temperature sensors in the cap which are regulated by valves. These functions can be controlled through a touch screen which monitors scalp temperature and delivers cooling liquid into the inner cap.
The inner cap on the other hand is made out of a silicone device that fits the wearer’s head snugly. It is equipped with channels and sensors where the cooling liquid is pumped. There are two channel networks that are separated into two parts allowing the front and back part of the head to be cooled independently.
Today the system has been FDA cleared for final clinical trials and will soon be available in the US. This trial will involve patients who are battling stage I or stage II breast cancer and are undergoing standard chemotherapy treatment.
Cooling systems and cold caps were not used in the United States in the past because of concerns that cooling the area might hide cancer cells. But experts are saying that scalp metastases that occur in breast cancer have a low chance of occurring.
Today, many are hoping that trials go well, because this hair loss solution just might be coming soon in the near future.
