Comprehensive Hearing Test in Reno Recommended National Hearing Test Follow-Up

Share this news:

Preliminary functional hearing screenings are now offered by phone from the National Hearing Test at nationalhearingtest.org. For follow-up care on scores which fall outside the normal range, participants should schedule a complete hearing assessment with a local audiologist.

The National Hearing Test, a functional Hearing Test administered by phone and developed with National Institute of Health funding, is a great start in detecting loss of hearing unilaterally or bilaterally. While a remarkable advancement in drawing attention to hearing loss nationwide and conducting initial screenings, the telephone-based test has certain limitations. It's not a substitute for the comprehensive Hearing Tests performed by audiologists. The audiologists at Silver State Hearing & Balance believe that getting the word out about the National Hearing Test is very important. Just as important is having local audiologists available in Reno to conduct comprehensive hearing tests and provide personalized counseling for individuals that receive a score outside of the normal range on their screening.

The National Hearing Test is available at nationalhearingtest.org and costs eight dollars. As part of Better Speech and Hearing Month, the test is free of charge during May 2014. The test is best thought of as a screening test for functional hearing – specifically the ability to comprehend speech amid noise. Each ear is screened separately and receives its own score of “Normal”, “Slightly Below Normal” or “Poor”. After finishing the screening, test takers are urged to contact a local audiologist as a next step. The ‘After the Test' page says, “If your results from the National Hearing Test were “marginal or below normal,” you should make an appointment for a complete hearing evaluation by a certified hearing professional. Even if your results are in the “normal” range but you still have concerns about your hearing, we encourage you to seek a complete hearing evaluation as well.”

Silver State Hearing & Balance – Reno Hearing Test Experts are available for comprehensive hearing testing for residents of Reno and adjacent areas. They are pleased to answer the follow-up questions from anybody who took the National Hearing Test and to arrange for a more in-depth hearing assessment. The publicity generated by the launch of the National Hearing Test is bringing much needed attention to the subject of hearing loss. As more people are tested, the need for local hearing testing and personalized treatment plans and follow-up health care increases in tandem. Silver State Hearing & Balance is delighted to position themselves as the leading local provider of hearing testing in Reno that residents can turn to after completing the national screening.

It's important to note that to obtain accurate results from the National Hearing Test, a land-line (not cellular) phone is needed. Test takers will also have to have the finger dexterity and coordination to enter over 50 numbers into the telephone's number pad. Anyone who suspects hearing loss and would have difficulty completing the phone-based screening is encouraged to schedule an exam directly with a local audiologist.
