Approximately fifty million Americans between the ages of 60 and 75 are afflicted with a hearing disorder known as tinnitus. The main symptom of tinnitus, which usually impacts considerably more men than women, is hearing tones which nobody else is able to hear. Tinnitus is generally not thought to be a disease in itself but a symptom of something else occurring in one or even more of the four portions of the auditory system – the outer ear, the middle ear, the inner ear, and the brain. Tinnitus often appears as a co-symptom connected to other types of either conductive or sensorineural hearing loss, instead of being a kind of hearing loss itself. In addition, since tinnitus fills the ears with a continual base level of ever-present sound, it brings down the absolute threshold of hearing and causes it to become increasingly difficult to hear weak sounds “over” the continual buzzing or ringing.

Hearing aids. Most individuals with tinnitus have some amount of hearing loss. The combined benefit of hearing aids is that they cover the noises of the tinnitus while also improving hearing ability. Most patients with tinnitus receive complete or partial relief from their tinnitus by using hearing aids.
Maskers. A tinnitus masker is a small electronic gadget that generates noises of its own to disguise (or mask) the tinnitus. Many patients report good results with tinnitus maskers although they don't improve hearing the way a hearing aid does.
Relaxation and Counseling. Relaxation techniques are essential for tinnitus patients because stress makes tinnitus seem even worse. Individuals with tinnitus might feel anxiety, depression and other psychological problems for which counseling is applicable.
Medication. Medications and drug therapies have two functions in tinnitus treatment. Some drugs offer direct reduction n the tinnitus symptoms while others are intended to target the anxiety and powerful emotions associated with tinnitus.
