The Maids New Hampshire discusses dangers of store-bought cleaning chemicals

With the increasing amount of cases of cleaning product poisoning, The Maids, one of the largest players in New Hampshire’s cleaning services market, steps up and educates the general public on cleaning product dangers that families may encounter.

The company, which has been servicing households all around New Hampshire for more than 25 years, took a pledge to use green-only products in their day-to-day operations, which, in their words, is designed to keep their clients, especially those with pets and children, safe from dangerous chemicals that can be found in some cleaning products.

“Sometimes sanitation products fall into the wrong hands,” said Katherine Cook, the general manager of the franchise. “We have seen when toddlers drink liquid soap, because the packaging looked like their favorite juice bottle with cartoon characters on it.”

Moreover, according to Cook, breathing in cleaning product fumes in large doses may cause damage to humans health. This especially concerns people with asthma, COPD, and other chronic respiratory health issues, as they may exhibit more severe damage to their lungs and respiratory system.

“Examples of dangerous cleaning products include such simple things as, for example, bleach,” said Cook. “Inhaling bleach fumes may burn the lining of the esophagus or lungs, which in turn may have more severe consequences.”

According to Cook, more families have started recognizing this issue and are trying to switch to healthier green cleaning, which may involve such substances as vinegar, lemon juice, and baking soda. In fact, it seems to be an increasing trend to replace “bought-in-store” chemicals with some DIY solutions that Pinterest and other social media outlets are flooded with.

“While those solutions are a great way to proof a house against dangerous chemicals, they are not always 100 percent effective and may require some extra work,” said Cook. “The Maids are using green solutions in such a way that it not only keeps our clients’ houses healthy, but also extra clean, as we specifically train our maids to use such cleaning solutions in the most effective way.”

Cook also suggested that if anyone had any concerns about chemicals, they may call The National Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.
