Casale Sonnino, an Italian villa bed and breakfast surrounded by vineyards and beautiful olive trees, recently celebrated a Silver Award at the New York International Olive Oil Competition (NYIOOC). Claire Treves Brezel, Port Washington resident and co-owner of Azienda Agricola Sonnino – Treves, located near Rome, was present at the news conference when the announcement was made. She stated, “I was very honored when our name was called out. Receiving an award is certainly a bonus, but the fact that our artisanal oil passed the high standards of the panel of super judges is even better.”Just like fine wine, every vintage has its own unique olfactory and taste sensory characteristics. The oil from the same trees can be significantly different year-to-year depending on the olive varieties, the soil, the weather and the whims of Mother Nature. Professional tasters can determine immediately if the oil has defects and cannot be labeled “Extra Virgin”. If the oil is high quality, then the judges continue to evaluate and numerically rank the oils on specific characteristics and dimensions.
The following description was given by the NYIOOC judges for Casale Sonnino Extra Virgin Olive Oil:
Aromas of fruit, green grass, ripe fruits and notes of balsamic. Taste exhibits abundant fruitiness, green grass, sweetness, bitterness, medium pungency and notes of eucalyptus, with exceptional harmony, a high complexity and a high persistence.
At the NYIOOC, 820 entries from 26 countries were evaluated and rated on a variety of attributes by an international panel of expert judges. Italy took home the most awards with 109, Spain came in second with 78, followed by the US with 50 awards. After a disastrous harvest in October 2014, where much of the olive crop throughout Italy was destroyed by the fruit fly and other maladies, Casale Sonnino was grateful to have an abundant year in both quantity and quality.
In October 2015, Azienda Agricola Sonnino - Treves gathered double the normal harvest from their over 700 olive trees. The olives were harvested by hand, gathered in nets and transported immediately that day to a local mill where they were mechanically and carefully cold extracted. This first cold pressed extra virgin olive oil truly Liquid Gold was stored, filtered and packaged at the Casale and shipped to the US.
Casale Sonnino Extra Virgin Olive Oil is a unique blend of estate-grown Rosciola, Carboncella, Venina and Tuscan Leccino cultivars. The yearly production ranges between 600 and 1500 liters of oil from 728 trees. This is only one to two liters of oil per tree.
As Brezel went on to say, “The olive oil that we produce is a labor of love. We have the same close-knit crew of local folks gathering every year and my brother and I are at the mill supervising each pressing. Our own award-winning Casale Sonnino Extra Virgin Olive Oil is exported to the US and is available for purchase.”
