CallerName.com Releases Inaugural U.S. Phone Spam Rankings

California tops list of the spammiest states, while Washington, D.C.'s 202 area code plays host to the most spam callers, CallerName.com reports

Drawing on over 200,000 user-submitted reports, CallerName.com released the site's first set of U.S. Phone Spam Rankings. To be updated on a daily basis, the newly released rankings reveal California as the most prolific state-level producer of unwanted phone contacts, with nearly one in eight spam calls originating there. Washington, D.C.'s 202 area code was the one most frequently tied to unwanted calls and followed by the non-geographic 855 and 844 prefixes in second and third places. Since launching at the beginning of this year, CallerName.com has become one of the Internet's most popular reverse phone lookup services, with a rapidly growing collection of user reports giving the site an especially accurate perspective on the sources of unwanted calls.

"We're happy to say that our brand-new phone spam rankings are now online," CallerName.com representative Tina Lee said, "No one likes receiving unsolicited calls from unknown sources, and we launched our site to give people everywhere a powerful tool for dealing with this problem. As a result, we've quickly amassed a huge database of reports that we have now used in building our first set of rankings. We think many people are going to be interested in these results, and we're committed to updating the rankings every day going forward."

Even with the nationwide Do Not Call Registry purportedly offering a way to opt out, Americans still suffer from a deluge of unwanted, commercially motivated phone calls from unrecognized numbers. One 2014 report by advertising company Marchex, for example, found that spam calls cost the country's small businesses an estimated $500 million in that year alone, with the figures having more than doubled from the year before.

One of the toughest challenges faced by those grappling with this problem is figuring out just which calls are worth answering. While today's smartphones typically provide as much information about a caller as is available, spammers are savvy about using fresh numbers whenever possible. As a result, many find themselves torn between possibly wasting time with a spammer's schemes or potentially missing out on an important call.

A proven answer to this dilemma is to make use of reverse number lookup sites like www.whocalledme.com. As the second-generation effort from the founders of that service, CallerName.com was launched at the beginning of this year to make it even easier and simpler to find out just who is on the other end of any given phone call.

Since launching on January 8, CallerName.com has built up a database of over 200,000 user reports on particular numbers, now covering all the most common sources of spam and many more. Among the first of their kind to be released anywhere, the company's new phone spam rankings for the United States provide visitors with a national-level overview, in addition to the ability to delve down into the most spam-heavy area codes in individual states.

As with the site's other services, the CallerName.com spam rankings are free to access and use. Whether for fighting back against spammers or simply finding out who owns the number attached to a missing call, CallerName.com is one of the Internet's most useful and accessible services of its kind.
