Cable Wine Systems discusses new research regarding Canadians showing heavy favour for homegrown wine.

Cable Wine Systems (www.CableWineSystems.com), creators of the most versatile and sophisticated wine racking system on the market, is weighing in on research showing Canadians are supporting Canadian wine.

Recent research conducted by market research company Mintel has shown that despite the interest in international wines, Canadians are displaying strong support for locally-made wine. Precise numbers indicate that 49% of Canadians prefer Canadian wines over foreign brands. “Traditionally, beer is the alcoholic beverage most associated with Canadians,” says Janice Bednarz, General Manager of Cable Wine Systems. “However, Canadians are just as proud of their wine culture, which is growing every year and has become recognized around the world.”

Less than one in three Canadians says they still prefer international wines over Canadian brands, while 30% of Canadians say smaller wineries are producing a higher quality product. In addition, when the research started analyzing regional support, the numbers showed even greater favour for those Canadian-based wineries, with 60% of local support in British Columbia and 53% in Ontario.

Red wine is still the most purchased wine in the country, with the overall annual growth of wine projected to stay around the four percent mark.

“This is actually an important study,” Bednarz concludes. “The fact that nearly half of Canadians consider the origin of the wine as the deciding factor in choosing a brand is a key takeaway from this research. And since Canadians are largely aligning with quality homegrown brands, it means they are more likely to buy national wines in the future.”
