Recent 2014/15 research at Bond University Australia confirms reflexology makes a significant difference in reducing stress, anxiety and depression. Professionally qualified Brisbane reflexologist Anne McBride from Redland Reflexologists has confirmed an increase in interest in reflexology.

In recent years reflexology has had a resurgence of popularity worldwide as the benefits have become well known and have helped everyone from the very young to the elderly. Reflexology promotes relaxation, nerve supply and stimulates 7000+ nerve endings in the feet. It improves circulation, stimulates vital organs, and reduces arthritic pain, shoulder, neck, back and hip pain. Reflexology also helps with post-surgery healing and pain. There is a wealth of information about the benefits of reflexology on Brisbane reflexologist McBride’s web site – www.redlandreflexologists.com.au

Reflexology is an ancient therapy that has stood the test of time and was used by the Egyptians 5 thousand years ago. A pictograph inside The Physicians Tomb 2330 BC depicts the Egyptian pharaoh Niuserre enjoying a reflexology treatment. Translations of the text reads “Do not let it be painful” to which the practitioner answers “I do it so you will praise it king.” Evidence of reflexology in 1582 is in the form of a book written by 2 physicians Dr Adamus and Dr Atitis on zone therapy (the original name for reflexology). Another book on zone therapy was written in the 16th Century by Dr Ball in Leipzig, Germany. Recent 2014/15 research at Bond University Australia confirms reflexology makes a significant difference in reducing stress, anxiety and depression.

Reflexology is a form of pressure point therapy that works most commonly on the feet, but also the hands and ears. Reflexology works in a similar way to acupressure, and stimulates the movement of energy along the nerve channels and helps to restore homeostasis. Brisbane professional reflexologist McBride said “The feet are like a little map in miniature of the body, reflecting body parts, organs and glands. When we stimulate the reflex points on the feet or hands they send a message to the corresponding area of the body. For example the chest area is reflected on the balls of the feet and the pelvis is represented on the heels.”

It would appear diabetics may also benefit from regular reflexology treatments. Circulation in the feet and body is improved and the liver, pancreas, kidneys, stomach, small intestine and endocrine system are stimulated.

McBride said “maternity reflexology increases the health and wellbeing of the mother and helps to alleviate common pregnancy symptoms, such as oedema, morning sickness, nausea, heartburn, hemorrhoids, backache, constipation, breathlessness, tiredness and sleeplessness. During a maternity reflexology treatment, gentle techniques are used to nurture both mother and baby.” Reflexologists adapt the pressure and ensure the mother is sitting or lying down in a well-supported, comfortable position throughout her pregnancy. Regular reflexology treatments makes pregnant women feel better and more comfortable and happier to go through their pregnancy. McBride said “reflexology as a natural therapy compliments the natural state of pregnancy.”

Reflexology has also been found to be perfect for senior citizens to help with overall wellness, pain management and other conditions, stress, fatigue, constipation, digestion and improved balance and walking. McBride said “a treatment with a professional reflexologist will feel absolutely blissful, soothing and relaxing. It gives the older person the gift of gentle, positive touch, in a respectful, caring way. Reflexology can have positive, uplifting effects on the mental and emotional state of the elderly. It calms the nervous system and promotes deep relaxation.”
