Dr. Tom Umbach mentors high school student for Clark County Medical Society annual mini-internship program.

On March 25th, Dr. Tom Umbach and Blossom Bariatrics hosted Estrella Rodriguez, an East Career and Technical Academy student, as part of the Clark County Medical Society (CCMS) Mini-Internship Program.  “Estrella was fantastic to work with,” Dr. Tom complimented.  “She was observant, inquisitive, and has steady hands; she will make an excellent doctor.”

Estrella Rodriguez was one of four juniors selected from East Career and Technical Academy’s Medical Professions Program to participate in the CCMS Junior Mini-Internship Program.  Estrella spent March 25th with Dr. Thomas Umbach, who specializes in bariatric surgery. She also spent time with an anesthesiologist, which is her future career interest.

Estrella shares, “During my visit, I shadowed two doctors, Dr. Thomas Umbach and Dr. Gupta, who specializes in anesthesiology. The day consisted of three gastric sleeve surgeries in the OR and they were laparoscopic. Before the actual surgery, I learned anesthesia procedures, including anesthetics and intubation. I also learned the importance of gathering patient family history and walking patients through the surgery and letting them know what to expect.”

“As I observed the surgeries, I learned the importance of teamwork, as everyone was involved. I honestly held back tears of joy multiple times during the day as who would’ve thought that I would be blessed with such an opportunity!”

“What struck me most was when Dr. Umbach told me to change into PPE and join the surgery. When the third gastric sleeve was done, the remaining portion of the stomach was left on the side for me to cut and suture back up! Reading about procedures or watching T.V. shows in which someone else does the work doesn’t compare at all to hands-on experience.”

Estrella concludes, “This experience was more than I originally expected; it was another aspect, which serves to shape my journey into a career in medical professions.”

The Junior Mini Internship Program strives to “enhance students desire to pursue a career in medicine and to keep our best and brightest here in Nevada! This experience is more than just an opportunity to shadow a doctor; this program affords the student a chance to interact with a doctor and the care team in the physical, intellectual and emotional environment the student plans to pursue.”

Dr. Tom is a highly sought-after medical mentor; as one of the busiest and most technologically advanced bariatric surgeons in the world, surgeons and students--worldwide--seek him out to shadow and learn at his side.  He shares, “When I connect with and mentor doctors and medical professionals, the world becomes a smaller place; when I mentor students and encourage them to build a bridge from high school to medical school, the world opens up and blossoms.”
