Teens and adults with ADHD, anxiety, stress, worry, and sleep issues in Berkeley and Albany, California have a helpful resource available to them. Pat LaDouceur, Ph.D., offers Neurofeedback Services that have been shown effective in managing these common but serious issues.

Neurofeedback, also known as neurotherapy or EEG Biofeedback, is a non-invasive, medication-free alternative that measures brain waves and activity. Research suggests that by changing or shifting brain waves, individuals can improve focus and attention and gain better control over behaviors and emotions. This therapy is valuable for millions of teens who might experience trouble at home and school due to ADHD, depression, or anxiety. It is also useful for adults who are trying to cope with depression, or who are dealing with stress and anxiety, and those who are struggling with lack of sleep or insomnia.

The Neurofeedback treatment is administered by sensors that are placed on the client’s scalp. The sensors measure brain wave activity and send the information to a computer, which in turn displays the client’s brain activity. Clients receive audio and visual feedback, which allows them to observe their brains at work. This, in turn, helps clients to improve their brain’s performance over time, and allows for a shift in mood and performance. Consistent practice is needed to sustain and maintain the new patterns that develop. Once the new pattern is learned, however, the benefits appear to be lasting.

Neurofeedback provider Pat LaDouceur, PhD., explains, “Since your brainwaves are the source of thoughts, feelings, attention and moods, a small change in brain activity can mean a large change in how well someone can focus or how they feel. Doing Neurofeedback is a little like riding a bike – it’s hard to explain exactly how it works, but the feedback helps clients find a place of balance, of equilibrium. In each session, my clients learn a little more about creating an alert, relaxed way of being. It’s exciting.”

LaDouceur also provides a newer Neurofeedback service called ISF, or “Infra Slow Fluctuation” aka Low Frequency Neurofeedback. The goal of ISF is to help clients feel both relaxed and alert at the same time. ISF Neurofeedback can help reduce anxiety, increase relaxation, improve attention, and help to regulate sleep patterns in teens and adults.

With ISF, the goal is not to increase or decrease any particular feature of the EEG. Instead, clients relax and listen to a tone that reflects a particular, very low, frequency—one that is optimal for them. It is analogous to holding up a mirror to observe brainwaves, but this “mirroring” itself leads to subtle shifts. These shifts are in the lowest EEG frequencies the brain produces.

These low frequencies seem to help regulate the brain. Shifts at the ISF level seem to result in changes in a person’s physiological state. In particular, the parasympathetic nervous system seems to be activated. For example, clients may experience increased hand temperature or improved coherence of heart rate variability. The process is beneficial and non-invasive.
