Bel Marra Health (www.belmarrahealth.com), a company that offers specially-formulated vitamins and nutritional products, is weighing in on signs that indicate sleep deprivation.

Approximately 20% of adults today are sleep deprived, which is defined as not getting the suggested amount of sleep needed to function at an optimal cognitive level. “With the way people are working and are constantly plugged in via the array of mobile devices, I would guess the number of sleep deprived people is even greater than 20%,” says Dr. Victor Marchione, spokesperson for Bel Marra Health. “Lack of sleep often has to do with work, but it also has to do with a conscious lifestyle choice people are making. Stress and personal issues play a significant role as well.”

Dr. Marchione says there are ways for people to determine if they are being deprived of sleep. Certain symptoms or actions signal that not getting enough sleep may be an issue.

“People are often not aware that lack of sleep could be the cause of the difficulties they are having in their day-to-day lives,” Dr. Marchione continues. “And if you aren’t aware of something, you can’t take steps to fix it.”

Studies have shown that one of the most noticeable signs of sleep deprivation is the inability or struggle to make simple decisions. If relatively routine decisions become overwhelming, it is a clear indicator of sleep deprivation. Getting sick more often is another indicator: studies have proven that those not getting enough sleep are three times more likely to get sick due to a weakened immune system.

“Another sign of poor sleep habits is overeating,” says Dr. Marchione. “Blood sugar levels are coerced when people don’t get enough sleep and it causes them to always feel hungry. What’s worse is that this often leads to poor food choices, thus further worsening the person’s health.”

Still more studies have shown that emotional stability is negatively impacted by poor sleep habits. Tests have shown that those who are sleep deprived have an increased sensitivity to disturbing images and have trouble controlling emotions in general.
