Bariatric Surgery: Frequently Asked Question Video About Healthy Hydration

Michelle Phelan, nutritionist at Blossom Bariatrics, answers a question about staying hydrated after bariatric surgery.

“My nutritionist told me that it’s really important to stay hydrated. [Since my surgery] I can’t drink very quickly and find it hard to get in a lot of fluids. What kinds of fluids are best and how much?” asked Samantha from Colorado Springs, Colorado.  In a video FAQ response, Michelle Phelan, nutritionist at Blossom Bariatrics, explains, “Well Samantha, [your nutritionist is] right.”  As part of a healthy lifestyle after weight loss surgery, “You need at least 64 ounces of fluid a day to stay hydrated.”

Consistent, appropriate hydration is crucial to bariatric surgery patients.  According to the article, “Staying Hydrated After Bariatric Surgery,” published in the June 2009 edition of Obesity Management by Susan Hemphill, M.S., R.D. and Kim Gorman, M.S., R.D. from the University of Colorado Denver, “Patients who undergo bariatric surgery are at risk for dehydration [...] which can result in re-hospitalizations.  [...]  Dehydration can occur for multiple reasons and is very common during the first 6 months postoperatively.”

Effective hydration after bariatric surgery begins with adequate water intake, which protects the patient, helps the body rid itself of waste efficiently, and promotes better weight loss.  Understanding that water can “get old,” Phelan continues, “I like to tell my patients, ‘Try the 80/20 rule.’ Eighty percent of your fluid intake should be water and 20% could be other alternatives.”

“Other alternatives” to water should be judiciously chosen.  The National Association for Weight Loss Surgery conducted a poll and published the results in the article, “The 10 Most Common Mistakes Weight Loss Surgery Patients Make.” The article shows that 4 of the 10 mistakes bariatric patients make deal with improper hydration:
- #3 - Drinking with Meals
- #5 - Not Drinking Enough Water
- #9 - Going Back to Drinking Soda
- #10 - Drinking Alcohol

Phelan concludes her answer to Samantha by suggesting that 20% of fluid intake can be, “sugar free fluids, like green tea, herbal tea, and other water-enhanced drinks, like Skinny Girl water enhancers and Crystal Light Pure.  Both of these products use Stevia for the sweetener and are a healthier option.”
