Two Australian women are fast busting the age old myth that it is expensive to travel the world. As volunteer house sitters they spent 2013 living in seven different Countries, 100% rent free.

Natalie Smith (44) & Jodie Thompson (43) started full time house sitting early in 2013 after being expat residents in Dubai for 16 months.

"Our weekly rent while living in Dubai was US$310", says Thompson, "That's over US$16,000 a year just in rent alone and, it was even more living back home in Sydney!"

Thompson went on to share her calculations of their flight costs to seven countries, on three continents. From February 2013 until February 2014, they spent just US$5,500 in total for the two of them to travel internationally.

The two women spent just ten nights in hotels and B&B’s in between house sitting assignments at an average of US$50 per night during the entire 12 month period thus saving their ‘normal’ outgoings at a conservative US$10,000 in their first year of full time house sitting. This figure does NOT include the savings they made by not having any utility bills such as internet, electricity & water to pay during the entire time as well.

"We only wish we'd started doing this sooner," ponders Smith, "It has been the best year of our lives and the equivalent of having earned US$10,000! It really goes to show that traveling the world is actually cheaper than living in a fixed location."
