Birmingham Style, a new coffee table book by Jean Allsopp, one of the country's top interior design photographers, and Cathy Still McGowin of Birmingham Home and Garden, shows why Birmingham, Alabama is emerging as a trendsetter in the world of food, art and design.

Beautiful homes in and around Birmingham, Alabama are available for viewing via a new book that features the work of architectural and interior design photographer Jean Allsopp and Birmingham Home and Garden magazine editor, Cathy Still McGowin.

The book follows on the success of the stunning 30 A Styles book for which Allsopp photographed homes in and around the beach area of the Florida panhandle known as 30A .

Birmingham Style is focused around interior design as well as the architecture and gardens of thirty unique homes in Birmingham including a variety of cottages, lofts and traditional homes.

Allsopp is known for her inspired photographs of beautiful homes around the country.

“Visitors to Birmingham, Alabama are always amazed by the gorgeous homes here. What they do not realize before they visit is that Birmingham has evolved from being a dirty, smoke-stack ridden, steel manufacturing city to one of the most beautiful places to live.” she shared.

Pockets of Birmingham have always been known for their glamorous, southern style homes. However, in the past few years there has been a revived interest in design with homeowners transforming old buildings into beautiful lofts and traditional homes into quaint little cottages or large, stylish retreats that were designed for relaxation and entertainment.

The increased interest in style and interior design coincided with the growth of UAB, a major research hospital and medical school in Birmingham that attracts physicians, researchers and technology professionals from around the world.  Many have purchased older homes in the area that were in need of update or renovation as well some of the beautiful, historic buildings in downtown Birmingham that have been converted into lofts where artists, professionals, craftsmen and retirees all come together in one place.  New luxury condominium developments have also popped up.

“The influx of entrepreneurs and professionals to Birmingham has fed the movement for design. You need people who have an interest in art and the financial means to buy it.  Architecture and interior design are a form of art that give people an opportunity to make their home unique.” stated the photographer.

A graduate of SMU in Dallas, Allsopp moved to Birmingham after being recruited by Southern Living Magazine, a regional magazine that features the work of several interior design photographers.  As senior photographer, her work appeared in every issue.  She moved to Coastal Living Magazine, a national publication, several years before her decision to work as a freelance photographer.

As an architectural and interior design photographer, Jean’s work has been featured in Food & Wine, The Wall Street Journal, Southern Living, Country Living, Traditional Home, Birmingham Home and Garden, Elegant Home and other well-known publications. Her freelance work includes specialized projects for publishers and ad agencies when professional photography is needed for interiors, exteriors and home furnishings including flooring and fixtures.

PMT Publishing is the Alabama-based publisher behind Birmingham Styles which can be found at higher-end furniture and interior design shops as well as major book stores.  The 192 page book is packed with more than 200 images showing a variety of homes and garden designs.

The homes that are featured show the skill of local interior design professionals such as Tom Adams, Melanie Pounds, Lisa Caldwell Flake, Beth McMillan, Mark Kennamer, Tammy Connor, Marsha Unger, Shea Bryars, Betsy Brown and Fran Kennan to name just a few.

Birmingham has been recently spotlighted in national publications for innovation in food, style and art. As Dana Wolter wrote in her recent blog post, “Birmingham Style will soon be at the top of my reading list.  It is going to be a must-read for anyone interested in stylish living.” Wolter is one of the talented interior decorators whose work appears in the coffee table book.
