Brothers Anthony and Ralph Napolitano, along with their mother Vera, are straight out of a sitcom about New Yorkers who own an Italian restaurant. They’re three spitfires, each with their own opinions—which they voice loudly. Working together is like going to war. Opened in 1927 by Anthony and Ralph’s grandparents, Ann & Tony’s is an Arthur Avenue institution, though it faces more competition now than ever. An old school red sauce joint that specializes in Italian American and Neapolitan fare, the recipes for the restaurant’s dishes came straight from generations of Napolitano grandmothers. Now it’s Anthony, Ralph, and Vera’s mission to keep Ann & Tony’s relevant in the face of trendy cafes and picky Yelp reviewers.
Anthony is the stereotypical chef – fiery, arrogant, and prone to throwing plates of food at the wall if he’s pissed. Ralph says his main job is to keep his brother in line, while Vera is equal parts mediator and instigator. What they have in common is that none of them have a filter; they tell each other exactly what they’re thinking and “discussions” quickly elevate into screaming matches.
