American Couples are Choosing to have their Weddings in Costa Rica

Share this news:

Costa Rica is quickly becoming one of the most popular locations to have a destination wedding. This is due to the affordability, great weather, natural beauty, ease of travel and much more.

As the average cost of a traditional wedding in the United States continues to rise, so does the percentage of couples who opt for a destination wedding. According to The Huffington Post, around 2 million Americans get married each year, and about 25% of those who do get hitched, do so outside of the United States. Costa Rica is one of the most popular locations based on affordability, the natural beauty of the country, and the ease of travel to and from.

It’s more than just the natural beauty of Costa Rica that draws star-crossed lovers to this tropical locale to say, “I do”. The cost of a wedding in Costa Rica is about 20% that of the cost of a traditional wedding in the United States. In 2012, TheKnot.com reported that the average cost of a wedding in the United States was about $28,500, while many couples who have been married in Costa Rica boast having finalized their budget at about $5,000 and some as low as $3,000.

There are countless locations for a wedding in Costa Rica, and among the most popular are the beaches of the Pacific Ocean, with white sand stretching for miles in either direction, and warm, turquoise water illuminated by the setting sun. Another hot spot for weddings in Costa Rica is the still active Arenal Volcano. This massive volcano is surrounded by rolling green hills, providing a unique backdrop for a memorable wedding.

So, the costs are lower and the beauty is higher. Another benefit to a wedding in Costa Rica is the ease of travel to and from the country. When coming from the United States, there are 22 direct flights from the U.S. to Costa Rica daily. It may be hard for the bride's Great Aunt Milly coming from England, but the majority of guests can purchase a ticket for between $300 and $700 roundtrip, depending on where they are flying from. Discount airfare can be found in the presence of group airfare packages. Some airlines offer discounts for large groups flying together. American Airlines offers a 5% discount for groups of 10 or more people, so by planning ahead, guests end up attending a wedding and getting a bargain vacation out of the same trip. Another popular trend for couples tying the knot in Costa Rica is to tell their guest to forgo bringing a wedding gift, and consider attending the wedding to be the gift.

Couples are stating that the biggest benefit to a wedding in Costa Rica is the fact that the honeymoon begins before the wedding even takes place! Forget about leaving the reception early to catch a plane and spend hours traveling after the big day.

Many couples are opting to save money and splurge on location. They just have to not be afraid to break the mold and do something a little different. Everyone wants their wedding to be special, so it makes sense that the number of destination weddings in Costa Rica is on the uptick for 2014.
