Al Thompson, who is originally from Harlem, shared in an interview that Harlem is a melting pot and over the years, intercultural expansion became more evident. He further stated that he was happy to showcase this cultural diversity that Harlem is known for and he felt the timing was fitting for a TV series to be set in Harlem.

People have described "Lenox Avenue" as "Boomerang" with a "Love Jones" influence and also as a male spinoff of "Sex In the City". The cast includes actors Al Thompson (Love Don’t Cost a Thing, The Royal Tenenbaums), Dorian Missick (TNT’s Southland), Ryan Vigilant (Gossip Girl), Chenoa Maxwell (Hav Plenty), Victor Williams (King of Queens), Lord Jamar (Brand Nubian).
