Fifty Shades' Fans Would Have Chosen A Vampire, A Psychopath Or A Neo-Nazi To Play Christian Grey, A Survey Reveals

Nearly 3,000 respondents – 73% of whom were women – gave their thoughts on the casting of the most anticipated male movie character in cinema history, that of Christian Grey in the film adaptation of the UK's best-selling book ever, E.L. James' 50 Shades of Grey. The trailer (the most viewed of 2014) for the film, which is released on Valentine's Day, 14th February 2015, gives a first glimpse of Belfast actor Jamie Dornan – best known for the TV series psychological thriller The Fall – as Christian Grey. When asked to give their initial reaction to the trailer, the number one concern was whether the relatively unknown actor could fulfill the audience's high expectations.

In the novel, Christian Grey is a multi-millionaire businessman who entices a young journalist, Anastasia (played in the film by Dakota Johnson, the daughter of actors Melanie Griffith & Don Johnson) into a forbidden world of bondage, domination & sado-masochism. Nearly one fifth (19.1%), said that Christian Grey was the key to the book's appeal, citing his being a powerful man (23.5%), dangerous & illicit (17.6%) and rich & glamorous (12.5%). By contrast, less than 2% said they related to Anastasia's character. However, while a further 15.3% said that the sex was what appealed most, over a quarter (26%) stated that it was the underlying love story itself that they most liked.

With more than half (64%) saying they had a very definite image of Christian Grey in their heads, and nearly a third (30.35) that this was a person from film or TV, they were then asked who they would have cast in the role. The number one choice was Ian Somerhalder, who plays Damon in TV's The Vampire Diaries, followed closely by Christian Bale who, as the sharp-suited killer in the film version of Brett Easton Ellis' notorious novel American Psycho, could arguably most invite comparisons with Christian Grey, while the break-out movie for the number three choice, Ryan Gosling, was as a Neo-Nazi in The Believer.

Jamie Dornan has to content himself with the number five position, behind White Collar's Matt Bomer at number four. The top ten is completed by Henry ‘Man of Steel' Cavill, Alexander Skarsgard, Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender & George Clooney.
