A progressive study confirms remarkable success in the use of Reishi extract against inflammatory breast cancer, IBC, and paves the way for new hope for the approximately 2,350 estimated new cases of invasive breast cancer and for the estimated 40,290 women in the US who areexpected to die from the disease this year.

As one of the hardest cancers to successfully treat, this research aimed to provide a clear understanding of the often lethal disease. This ability to thrive is credited to its highly invasive nature and absence of palpable tumor mass. Current IBC therapy is composed of systemic therapy (primary anthracycline-based chemotherapy), with radiotherapy and surgery. Though, this method of treatment often attacks both irregular and healthy cells.

Researchers used commercially available Reishi extract capsules to evaluate the effect of reishi on cell viability. The team stated that “When IBC cells were treated with 0.5 or 1.0 mg/ml Reishi, there was a 67% and 98% reduction in cell number. However this effect was not seen in the noncancerous mammary epithelial cells.” This marks a striking success for the researchers and the pioneering new treatment, which is unique in the fact that it does not destroy both cancerous and noncancerous cells.

The research is a game changer in the fight against multiple cancers, and could offer hope to many. The findings specifically state that while most studies have focused on the individual compounds rather that the effects of the whole mushroom as a dietary supplement or a medical herb, “the therapeutic effects of Reishi have not been investigated on IBC – Our results show that Reishi selectively inhibits cancer cell viability and invasion.”

On the heels of several other positive, progressive cancer studies, these findings illustrate just how far scientists have come to gaining a real understanding of this mysterious disease. When asked about these new findings, Kelly Reynolds, a representative for Reishi Force, said “This study is a step in the right direction, helping to further illustrate that natural means can have a real impact on deadly diseases like cancer. Reishi mushroom, when used in conjunction with conventional treatments or on its own, could really help to improve the quality of life in people suffering from all forms of cancer.”
